Rayen K. Rooney is a recent graduate of Soka University of America with a Bachelors of Arts in Liberal Arts with a concentration in Social and Behavioral Sciences.
The mission of Soka University of America is to “foster a steady stream of global citizens committed to living a contributive life.” The education is based on the Soka pedagogy “to create value” for the betterment of society. The university is founded on the Buddhist principles of peace, human rights and the sanctity of life. In his fourth year at Soka University of America, he was elected to be the Executive Council Student Body President.
Studying abroad in Nagoya, Japan at Nanzan University’s Japanese Language and Culture Program has allowed Rayen to further develop his Japanese language skills. He has had opportunities to do field research in Costa Rica to learn about migrant workers and indigenous people’s social inequality; Indonesia and Singapore to learn about the global coffee market; and French Polynesia to learn about the French presence and influence on the Polynesian identity.
He is currently working at an insurance company as he plans to attend graduate school in the upcoming school year.
